Short Film “Wake” is Twenty Minutes Well Spent

Let me post this up before I completely forget about it. I caught this film a few months ago and thought it was excellent. Directed by New York University graduate Bree Newsome, “Wake” is about:

A repressed woman murders [who] her domineering father, freeing herself to pursue her heart’s desire. Using a local folk magic called “root work”, she conjures a demon to aid her in creating the man of her dreams– but soon finds herself in a waking nightmare.

Considering the myth that black people don’t watch science fiction (or, in this case horror. Same thing) I was happy to find this 20-minute short. Newsome creates a very creepy atmosphere aided by a wonderful cast of unknown actors with a standout performance from Buena Batiste-Webber — clearly channeling Beloved’s Thandie Newton — as the demon.

Sure, Black people don’t like science fiction. That’s right, black filmmakers. Get angry!
